Musician Roy Marcelin, 67, died Jan. 2, 2012, in Indianapolis. He had come to this area as a young airman to Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul and stayed to raise his family.

Mr. Marcelin is remembered as a singer in notable local soul acts of the ‘60s. He later fronted R&B and blues bands and often played the role of master of ceremonies at Champaign County blues events.

Mr. Marcelin lived in Rantoul before moving to Indianapolis with his wife.

He worked for IBM and the University of Illinois and was a member of the Rantoul human relations and planning commissions as well as of Concerned Citizens of the Rantoul-Area Community. He also was active with the Champaign County NAACP, having served as interim president in 2004-05.

The event at The Iron Post is free and will feature Candy Foster and the Shades of Blue Band, Kilborn Alley, Abraham Johnson and Jesse Meeks from the Razor Sharp Band, Jim “Junior” Angel with members of his new blues trio and other musicians from the area.

In true blues jam fashion, players will be welcome to join in the evening’s musical improvisation.
